The Roaming Halloween Gnome

This may be the last year that mom gets to choose the costume, so LWK is a gnome!  It was a pretty easy costume to pull together.  The hat is cute enough that I might make it in fleece and use for a real hat this winter.  The beard didn't come together perfectly (it stretched out a bit) but I made it detachable from the hat.  But my favorite part of the costume - the Mork from Ork rainbow suspenders.  Too darn cute!

The Night Before Halloween

And all through the house, this mom is drawing jack-o-lantern faces on diced peach cups for the daycare Halloween party tomorrow.  Notice that they are all different because every child is a special little flower whose fruit cup needs to be as unique as they are.....

Actually, these were pretty fun and easy to do.  Of course I got the idea from Pinterest, but it could be a nice healthy alternative to send each year and when LWK is a bit older, he can help draw the faces.  Mental note, however, is to buy the fruit cups a bit earlier than the night before since other moms here in Pleasantville are addicted to Pinterest as well.  I got the last three packages of orange colored fruit cups!

The Serious Eater

LWK loves imitating everything we do and he really is starting to like using utensils.  Or at least holding them while he picks up food with his free hand.  He doesn't seem to favor his right or left for holding the fork or spoon.  He does actually use them to get food and he is getting better at it.  It is kind of fun to see him concentrate so much to use them, it just doesn't happen when he is super hungry!

The Birthday and The Pumpkin

It was J's birthday this weekend and I made him his favorite Chocolate Stout Cake ala The Smitten Kitchen that is AMAZING.  LWK wasn't sure about the whole cake/candles/dad sitting on the floor thing, so he didn't want to get close.  Happy Birthday, Daddy!

I'll just watch from back here, Dad.

Happy 37th Birthday, J!

We also carved our 30lb pumpkin from last weekend.  I wasn't sure what LWK would think about it and if he would go crazy, so I stripped him down.  He was surprisingly calm and unsure about this whole thing.

Hmm, this is interesting...

It's kind of slimy.

And a bit sticky.

He did try eating it, but I added this photo because his eyes are so amazingly blue.....

In the end, he was super unimpressed.  It was kind of like "so you have me running around half naked to play with something slimy that I don't like.  I'm just going to go upstairs and wait for my bath."  Good try, mom, maybe it will be more fun next year when he is a bit more adventurous.

The Next Michael Phelps?

I haven't been feeling well the last couple of days and stayed home from work today.  We ALMOST skipped swim lessons, but since it was the last one we are taking until after the first of the year, I felt like we needed to go.

Last week LWK was promoted to having fewer floats on and today we got to do a different configuration (3 on back and two in the front).  And then he did it - he doggie paddled all the way across the pool without the Coach helping!

I really didn't think swim lessons would be of a lot of value aside from LWK learning how to be in the water with someone other than me.  I have to say, these lessons have been great.  Really, who would have thought that an 18 month old would be able to paddle across the pool by himself?  Count me as one proud Mommy!

The Pumpkin Patch

This was LWK's second trip to the pumpkin patch.  Last year he was all cozy in the Ergo, this year he got to really check out the pumpkins.  His new galoshes we a bit too big, but he liked splashing in the puddles anyway.  We somehow dodged all the rain this weekend for a beautiful Sunday morning with amazing clouds and sunshine!

He also loved knocking on the pumpkins (he now can say "knock, knock, knock") and riding in the wheelbarrow.  We ended up deciding on a 30lb pumpkin to bring home and carve.  We will carve him next weekend and see what LWK thinks about the pumpkin guts.  I feel a great photo-op coming on!

Surveying the Pumpkin Patch.  The new galoshes are a bit too big.

Look!  PUMPKINS!!!

What's this for?

Daddy is a good wheelbarrow driver.

Taking our pumpkin home!

The Nose and Toes

LWK is learning his body parts.  He is so sweet and proud of himself when he points to his nose, toes, ears, tummy and my personal favorite, mouth.  Perhaps the even funnier part was when I was replaying the video, he did it all again!

The Kisser

LWK learned how to give kisses!  He is so sweet when he does it - he leans in and gives a good "mwah."  Love this little boy!

The Breakthrough???

We may have had a breakthrough at daycare this morning.  When we arrived and I put LWK down, he went straight for the books, not the cars or trucks!

Our Viking

I had a haircut this morning, so J, LWK and I went to the mall.  LWK is just too busy and funny lately.  He is really taking off with talking.  As I was looking at pants at Macy's, he spied the sales clerk folding clothes and he gave her a perky "Hi!"  She didn't hear him at first, but he said it a few more times until she responded!  So, in the last week, he has started consistently saying "Mommy," Daddy," "Hot," "Bye," "Hi" and tonight, "Night Night."

But the best part of today - I found LWK a Viking hat!  I am so excited for the weather to get a bit colder so he can wear it ALL...THE...TIME!

Maybe a future Western Viking???

Swimming, Week 2

LWK is so much happier about his swimming lessons this week!  I am still suiting up, but it has been pretty unnecessary.

On Monday I had suited up and was ready to get in the pool with him, but he was happy to do it himself.  I was feeling a little self conscious standing by the side of the pool in  my suit while other parents were on their iPhones.  I grabbed my hoodie and was putting it on while the instructor was working with LWK.  He put LWK up on the side of the pool and my arm was caught mid-sleeve when LWK jumped back in and landed face first.  He almost gave me a heart attack, but the instructor was right there and flipped him over and lifted him back up.  LWK was giggling and perfectly happy!

On Wednesday, I kept a good hold on him and he continued to be really happy with his lessons.  He climbed up the steps to the slide himself and would have happily slid all the way down himself but his floaters caught him right at the bottom so the instructor had to pull him down the rest of the way.  He was a big boy and jumped off the diving board all by himself - no surprise there after Monday's performance!

Waving at Mommy!

So LWK has always been a pretty good sleeper.  So good, in fact, that I always check on him before I go to bed just to make sure he is okay.  Unless he is sick or teething, once he is out, he is really out.  He loves having a pillow in his bed and he won't keep that blanket on himself no matter how many times I recover him.    He loves to snuggle with his baby doll right before he goes to sleep.  But one of my favorite things to see when I check on him is him sleeping with his bum in the air.  He is already starting to keep flat or on his side when he sleeps, so this bum in the air phase will probably end any day now.  I am glad I caught it to remember.

I think LWK is going to completely bypass calling me Mama.  Yes, he has been saying mama for a while, but it's never been with the same gusto as "dada" has had over the past year.  In fact, I think that dada often means "whichever parent I want right now."

Today when I picked him up at daycare, he came running to me yelling "Mommy!"  After all this time of calling myself Mama, and being disappointed that he didn't call me Mama very often, Mommy was a bit of a thrill and melted my heart.  I'll keep it.
Decked out in his Canada gear for Canadian Thanksgiving!

Where's Mom?

I read this article last week about moms choosing to not be in photographs:

It really got me thinking about how many photos I have been in (or not) over the past 18 months with LWK.  I even took the time to peruse the 80+ gigabites of photos of LWK's life and I was shocked about how many photos I am NOT in.  It seems like I want to make sure to "capture the moment" and the moment is with everyone but me.  Is it because I feel like I don't look good enough?  Is it because I want to make sure that the photo is "just right" and I have to do it myself (aka, my control freak nature coming out)?

If something, G-d forbid, happened to me tomorrow, what record would LWK have of how I was involved in his life?  Would he have memories of me - of how he played with my necklace or hair or wedding ring?  That I picked out his clothes every day or took him to swim lessons or read "The Little Blue Truck" over and over and over again?  If he wanted to know what I looked like, honestly, the pictures of me are slim pickings as of late.  So I am going to make a commitment to change this, so here it goes:

LWK is looking like a little man when we went out to brunch on Saturday.  I love this little corduroy hat that was cousin Joel's!

Hot Wheels!!!

I finally broke down and got LWK a few Hot Wheels!  Seriously, what other toy can you buy for 97 cents that will bring so much joy for this kiddo????  And yes, Grandpa, they are all Mopar products - a Barracuda,  a Charger and, my personal favorite, a Dart!!!

Making sure the track is ready to go!

He makes the funniest faces and sounds when he is racing!

The First Swim Lesson

I got a great deal on a local swimming lesson package for kids and I was so excited for LWK to have some real lessons.  We thought he would LOVE it after his great experience at the pool last summer.

There were four other kids in the class, three older girls and another little boy who was a bit older than LWK.  LWK LOVED kicking his feet at the side of the pool and splashing.  He was even okay with the getting in the pool part, but as soon as he got water in his face, he started screaming.  They have a rotation system where the kids get about 1 minute with the instructor and then the kids practice their skill (for the little ones, it was sitting on the side and splashing with their feet) as the instructor worked with the other kids.  LWK just clung to me between rotations.  I had that awful feeling of trying to support him and encourage him but not be a hovercraft parent or feed into his anxiety.

This photo does no justice to how upset he was...
I don't expect him to be the next Michael Phelps, but I want him to like the water and swimming.  He has been fearless around it since the pool this summer.  I guess we will see if we have scarred him for life at bathtime tonight.  Hopefully it will be better for future lessons - we have 7 more!!!

18 Months Old

Our dear, sweet LWK, you have now been "on the outside" twice as long as you were "on the inside" of me.  It sure doesn't seem like that long ago that I would rock in your nursery and wonder what you would look like and what your personality would be.  18 months later, here we are with a little boy who looks so much like I did when I was 18 months old and with a charming personality that lights up for everyone you come in contact with.  We are so blessed.

This month:

  • Height:  33 inches
  • Weight:  24.5 lbs at the doctor's office.  You were a big boy and stood on the scale all by yourself!
  • Our little Linus!
  • Teeth:  Still 9!  Your gums feel like hamburger where your other molars are working their way through.  You have some days where you drool like a faucet and nights when you wake up crying.  I know they hurt, but aside from some Tylenol there isn't much we can do.  I feel like these molars have been coming in since June and just won't totally pop through.
  • Clothes:  You are moving into 24month/2T size clothes.  You need the length in shirts of a 2T, but the width of 18 months and even some of those are pretty wide still!  Adjustable pants are still our friends!  Your uniform is jeans, a T shirt, a hoodie and converse.  You like wearing hats, or at least putting them on and taking them off!
  • Shoes:  You are Mr. Bigfoot.  You were in size 4s in May and you flew through size 5s and now are a size 6!!!
  • Diapers:  Size 4s
  • Bottles:  One when you wake up and one when you go to bed.
  • Food:  You keep trying new things, some things are better than others.  You like cheese sandwiches, hummus and apples!  Mac and Cheese, peas, applesauce, yogurt, cheese, eggs, waffles and pancakes are still staples.  We are still holding off on trying peanut butter...
  • An ultra close-up!
  • Movement:  You are a walker and starting to run!  You love to climb up the slide and slide back down.  You throw balls overhand, never underhand.  You can dribble a soccer ball.
  • Talking:  You are SOOOO close to starting to string words together.  You are constantly babbling and I know you think we should understand what you are saying.  WaWa has been a new addition as well as Wow and Daddy.  You are certainly good at getting your point across, even if we aren't sure what the word means.
  • Social:  You love your friends at daycare.  I see you hugging them when I pick you up and you play with both the big kids and the little kids.  You are sweet with babies!
  • Playing:  You are starting to pretend more.  You like to race your cars and throw your balls.  You are really liking to build with your MegaBlocks.  We have a book where you push a button to say the word that matches a picture and you are great at finding the correct button!  You are starting to put simple puzzles together.  You love push toys and riding on your little car scooter.  You like to pack and unpack things.
  • Cuteness of the Last Month:  Loving the backyard, Playing in the curtains, saying "uhoh" when we walk into your room in the morning like you are in trouble, climbing up on the couch to chill with us, blowing on food when it is hot (or even when it isn't), hugs and giving kisses - or at least saying "Mwah" when we kiss you!

Such a thinker.
