Swim Lesson #2

Today went better than Tuesday.  LWK followed directions better and loved the shower (even though he doesn't look happy!)!

Since the Morks were on vacation, we had our Wednesday open.  We started off at Grandma and Grandpa's house to play with the cousins!

LWK had a great time loading and
dumping the Lincoln Logs!
The boys were using the power tools to cut Grandma's hair!
The neighbors were having some bushes taken down and the boys had fun running in the yard and watching the arborists work.  Most surprisingly, LWK wasn't afraid of all the noise!

JRK thought that it was really loud, and loved every minute of it!

JAK doing his best Lewis and Clark impression!

After the fun time with the cousins, we headed to visit the Hammondses.  The boys started out playing hockey!

Then there was some "monkey see, monkey do" when MMH put up his hood, LWK had to pull upi the back of his shirt to be *just like* his buddy!

Then we headed out to the sprinklers the boys had a blast!

And the moms had a pretty great time too!

Swim Lesson #1

We had our first swimming lesson of the summer today.  I am thrilled that LWK isn't afraid of the water, but he was so impatient that he was a crying mess before we got in!  Leave it to the teacher's kid to not follow directions.  I was kind of mortified, thank goodness he is pretty adorable in those swim trunks.

Cannon Beach Weekend

One of my colleagues and her husband just bought a house in Cannon Beach, Oregon.  When they aren't using it, she lets friends rent it for a VERY nominal fee and we are just lucky enough to be considered friends!  It is a long drive down, but we really like the beach in Oregon and the weather was BEAUTIFUL.

Their house is only 2 blocks from the beach, so it was a perfect little walk.  LWK couldn't wait to get to the beach to build sandcastles!

Helping Daddy with his sand turtle.

Filling Up the Buckets!

LWK probably enjoyed stomping on the castles more than anything else!!!

We headed out to dinner and LWK is all about the selfie lately, but usually wants to push the button!

Okay, could he be any sweeter with his Daddy?

Our attempt at a family photo at the beach!

On Saturday, we headed south to the Oregon Aquarium.  It was a long drive, but so worth it!

Showing the otters his Ted E. Bear.

"Mommy, I LOOOOVVVVEE the fishies, can I hug them???"

On our final morning in Cannon Beach, I wanted to show LWK the cool tidepools.  We walked out to Haystack Rock, but LWK wasn't interested in anything but the puddles!

To jump, or not to jump, that is the question.

Thank you Cannon Beach, we had a wonderful time and can't wait to visit again!

So it is raining and we just weren't sure what to do with the kiddos for our weekly playdate, so we headed to the mall to walk and be generally cute!

Blowing Bubbles

We had a nice breakfast and playdate with MMH and his mom today!  The playing outside with the water table started off low-key but turned into full crazy splashing/toddlers running around in diapers time!

Practicing Bubble Blowing for Swim lessons!

Our Day Out With Thomas

When we moved to our town 7 years ago (before we were married and LWK wasn't even a twinkle in our eyes), we found out that our little train station hosted a Day Out With Thomas where utter madness occurs at the depot as little kids and their families descend upon the station to meet Thomas the Tank Engine.  I told J at the time that we would avoid downtown like the plague for the entire weekend of the event in only the way that young, childless new homeowners can say with such ferocity.

Fast forward 7 years, one marriage and a 3 year old boy obsessed with Thomas and we were buying tickets in April for this July event to make sure we got the time and day we wanted!  9am, Sunday morning (with advice to get there AT LEAST one hour early, so make that 8am on Sunday morning).  We were armed with coffee (for J and I), snacks for LWK and a camera.

When we got to the depot, there was actually parking, so we were happy to not have to take the shuttle in to the event.  We parked and got into line with other crazy parents.  The guy ahead of us kept asking how much she paid for the tickets, how long it would take, why there wasn't any alcohol served at the event....  Oy.  LWK was actually super patient while we waited in line to board the train for the ride.  We were able to go to the front passenger car, so we could see the blue of Thomas up ahead!

The river!!!
LWK LOVED the train ride.  The entire time, he had a sweet look of wonderment as he watched out the window that just melted our hearts.  That alone was totally worth the cost of the day!

LWK was snuggled up to daddy for a lot of the ride.  So sweet....
Once we got off the train, we checked out all the events going on.  The gift shop was actually calm, so we went there first and got LWK a book with many of the engines (and their stories) in it, a couple of coloring books, a train car with the year 2014 and then LWK actually asked for something, the engine Ferdinand!  It was so sweet how he asked,  we couldn't say no.  He pretty much held onto it the whole rest of the day!

We were able to get some great shots between the trains - like this one that is a bit like some of our wedding photos, taken in the same place, just a train or two over!

We got to meet Sir Topham Hatt.  LWK wasn't a fan.  Actually, he was excited until we got to the front of the line, and then he clinged to me and didn't want to get near him!

It was kind of the same experience with Thomas.  LWK loved watching him pull in and liked that Thomas smiled and his eyes moved, but he REFUSED to calm down for the picture.

Before we headed out, we stopped and watched the older gentlemen running their electric trains and LWK was fascinated.  Unfortunately, he wouldn't stay behind the orange cord (he just wanted to get close, I don't think he would have done anything) so when we pulled him back, he melted down and we decided to head home.

And we're done.......
All in all, I will consider the day a success.  LWK isn't ever super happy about getting his photo taken and it has to be weird to see characters from TV and books come to life.  There were LOTS of kids melting down and overwhelmed, so LWK being upset was pretty minor.  There are so many expectations on days like this.  I'm not sure if we will go again next year, but I sure am excited for the train ride we are going to take by Mt. Rainier at the end of August - LWK will love it!
