He Can See Clearly Now.....

LWK had his first eye appointment today!  There is a great, FREE program called "InfantSee" to check infants for early vision problems.  He did a great job and the doctor didn't notice any problems at all and even said that LWK was the easiest baby he has ever examined.  Sophie the Giraffe played a big role in helping LWK look where he needed to for the doctor to see into his eyes.  He won't have to go back to the eye doctor until he starts school.  I think that J and I will be pretty on top of his eyes since we both are so blind and got glasses in 2nd grade!  I just remember how the world suddenly opened up to me when I got those glasses - I could see the board and read a book without having my face 2 inches from the page. I hope LWK never has to have glasses, but I am so thankful we know what signs to look for before his vision gets as bad as mine did!

After the eye doctor, we paid a visit to our friends Bill and Carol.  They are the nicest couple and I so enjoy seeing them and talking to them!  LWK had a great time visiting and flirting!  I think Bill and Carol are a little smitten with him - what do you think?  In my humble opinion, this little guy can't ever have too many surrogate grandparents around!

Winning Over the Students

LWK is the most popular almost 6 month old at my middle school!  Today we had our music department picnic and is was a complete hit.  He was flirty and smiley to everyone and was just his usual happy self.  We are so lucky to have such a sweet, social and happy baby!

Food Truck Rodeo!

To celebrate Diane's birthday, we went to the "Food Truck Rodeo" in Seattle.
We had yummy pulled pork sandwiches from Maximus Minimus (with awesome ginger lemonade) and stood in line for some super awesome donuts.

It was a windy and cold Seattle weekend (it was in the 90s last weekend!), but we braved the elements.  Next year, LWK will be able to join us in the yumminess!

Make New Friends...

LWK has his first friend (that isn't the child of one of my friends)!  When I dropped him off at daycare yesterday, there were two other mothers who had gotten there before us.  The one whose son is LWK's age was in a bouncy chair as she signed him in.  When he saw LWK, he started kicking and laughing and our little guy started kicking and laughing too.  I think these 5 1/2 month olds realize that they have to stick together as the only two non-mobile kiddos at daycare.

It also made me feel better about our daycare choice.  LWK is always happy when he sees the provider and seems happy, fed and well cared for when I pick him up.  I was worried he would be stuck and maybe ignored as the stationery kiddo, but I am glad he is making connections with the provider and the other kids.  I still miss him like crazy during the day, but I am happy to know he is having fun making new friends (and keeping the old)!

Grandparents Day

Today was Grandparents' Day.  Thank goodness I had "Sprout" to remind me since I was avoiding as much 9/11 coverage as possible.  Our little guy is so lucky to have wonderful grandparents that get to watch him grow up!
LWK with Grandpa, Grandma, Grammie and Grampie, April, 2011.  I can't believe he was that tiny!

The Getaway

Finally! We were able to get away as just our little family of three this weekend. We celebrated Mom's 36th birthday (wow, am I that old???) and our first family roadtrip to Bellingham. Bellingham is the first trip that J and I took together as a couple and also the place of our "Babymoon" a couple months before LWK came along. I love that we are sharing one of our favorite places with LWK.

Each time we visit, we make time to hit Village Books, The Toy Garden (where we got to buy some fun toys for our boy!), visit the campus of WWU (LWK's future college) and take a walk along the bay.

LWK testing out his new toy by putting it in his mouth, of course.

A walk along the bay to enjoy the sunset!

We even got to meet up with Morks and enjoy doughnuts and potato burritos. All in all, a perfect weekend with my boys!

5 Months Old

I know I say it every month, but I can't believe how quickly time is flying by. Our little LWK is 5 months old and becoming such a spitfire of late. He is starting to wiggle to where he wants to be on the floor or in his crib. He is loving his toys and has his favorites - his lifefactory teething ring and his Skip*Hop Owl are his "can't live withouts." Here are his current stats:

Length: 25 inches
Weight: 15lbs, 10oz (2 weeks ago at the doctor's office, I bet he is pushing 16lbs now!)
Clothing Size: 6 month for the most part, but he has a few 9 month onesies that work
Diaper size: 3s!
Food: about 30 ounces of formula daily

  • He is really babbling up a storm of late
  • He is passing toys and other objects between his hands
  • He is easily rolling from back to his tummy and occasionally from tummy to back
  • He is riding in his stroller without the car seat and loving checking out the world
  • His feet are CONSTANTLY moving, we have the Lord of the Dance on our hands!
  • Scarves and Peek-a-boo are very fun
  • He is tolerating his pacifer
  • His fingers are ALWAYS in his mouth!
  • He is drooling all over - teeth may be on the horizon
  • He REALLY is fighting sleep - he doesn't want to miss out. He still sleeps through the night though (thank goodness now that mom is going back to work)
Having a baby means that people are constantly checking him (and you) out in public and saying some pretty funny things.  My favorite this month was a woman in Fred Meyer who asked him, "How long did it take your mommy to glue on those eyelashes this morning?"  He does have pretty fabulous eyelashes, probably because he is a boy!

1st Day of Daycare

Well, the day I have been dreading since I started my maternity leave on March 31st arrived and we all survived. We all woke up early to get LWK and mom ready to be out the door by 6:30. Dad fed and clothed LWK, mom had set out his outfit for the day since I am a control freak like that. I decided on his Cookie Monster shirt so other kids would be interested in him.
We made it out the door by 6:25 and stopped at Starbucks so mom could buy a bit of happy. LWK fell asleep en route and Mom was weepy. When we got to daycare, our boy was all smiles. Our provider was so sweet as I gave her his schedule and supplies and tried to hold back my tears. When I finally felt like I could leave him and was heading out the door, she told me that LWK would have a good day and so would I. It was what I needed to hear.

I hit the ground running when I got to school and was fine once kids came in. Since the first day of school is always busy, I was able to keep focused. I was out the door at 3:31 and picking him up at 3:36. He was all smiles when I came in. I could tell he was super tired because he was so interested in what the other kids were doing. Hopefully once he gets used to being around other kids, he will go down for his naps. He came home and crashed at 5:30pm! He had a good day and was the star as the new kid. I was happy to learn that almost all the kids at his daycare enter as infants and continue through preschool.

I hope all continues to go well. Although I miss him like crazy, I am glad that I have a job that keeps me super busy so there is no time to wallow. I hear that it gets easier every day, let's hope it is true!
