Another Tooth

This one kind of snuck up on us.  We have been saying that LWK was teething FOREVER, but nothing was showing up.  This morning, our little drool monster put my finger in his mouth and I felt a sharp prong on the BOTTOM.  He already has his two front bottom teeth, but now one of the ones to the side is growing in!  leave it to my kiddo to break the mold and forego the usual order of bottom 2, top 2 and then sides.  Again, Guess who is running this show?!?!?!

Our little chewer/drooler in action.

He can use those teeth to really show that Baby Mum-Mum who's boss!

Mom.  No sweeter word has yet to be uttered by our little LWK (unless you ask J and he would say it was "Dada").  I know this just happened to be a babble he said, but it still melts my heart.  He has actually been saying it more often this week.  One of these days he will say both "Mama" and "Dada" and mean it.

Electricity is Good....

Wow, we just survived 2 1/2 days with no electricity.  The last week of weather has been crazy in the Seattle area.  After all the snow, we got an ice storm and there were upwards of 280,000 people without power in the area.  Insane.  Ours was the first to go in my family at about 7am on Thursday morning, followed by my parents' that afternoon.  My sister, who lives near insanely huge trees never lost power, go figure.

The first day was a bit of an adventure.  At least until it got dark.  We used fondue pots to make soup.  We found out that our gas fireplace turns on without electricity.  We read our Kindles.  Everything was fine and dandy until the juice ran out on the cell phone.  And then I panicked a bit and wished that my Camp Fire group had focused more on "how to make do with the basics" rather than "how to put on make-up and get boys to notice us."

Friday morning.  J shoveled and talked to neighbors.  I filled our ice chest with the little bit of ice from our freezer and snow and tried to save some of our perishable food.  I got the courage up to LIGHT THE GAS STOVE with a long stemmed lighter.  We had soup on the stove AND grilled cheese. Thank God I didn't blow up the house....

Saturday morning.  We got up and decided to check out the rest of the world and have something besides cereal and soup to eat.  I realized I hadn't left our house for a week!  We had a yummy HOT breakfast at Pomegranate with COFFEE.  LWK flirted incessantly with the people at the table next to us.  J went to work for a while.  LWK and I did some shopping for things like baby food since all the baby food I had made and thawed in the freezer.  My sister called and said our area was on the news and they didn't project us getting power back until TUESDAY.

We picked up burgers and headed home to our cold and dark house.  We got off the freeway and the light was flashing a 4 way stop!  This was an improvement from the morning when part of the intersection was actually closed.  We drove up the hill and saw the expensive houses had power (not shocking, those are the rich folks, right)?  Then the gas station around the corner from us had power and I said to J, " I think we are on the same grid, right?"  We turned onto our alley and, "Let there be light!"  We could see the lights to our garage were on!

It was so nice to walk into a warm and lit house.  Laundry is being done as well as the dishes in the dishwasher.  Tomorrow we will clean out the fridge and freezer, but for tonight our home is warm and cozy.  All is right in the world.

Snow Day(s)!

Bundled up with Mommy
When we get snow here in the PNW, it is usually a pretty big event since it doesn't really happen that often.  With all the different weather patterns and factors with the coast, the sound and the mountains, snow can be pretty hit or miss.  The past few days have been a total hit. Since we live in the foothills of the Cascade mountains, we have gotten a lot of snow.  Probably about a foot.  This means we have not really left our house since Sunday.  Schools are cancelled and people are working from home.  The only people brave (or stupid) enough to drive on our street are in 4 wheel drive vehicles.  We are well stocked with food but I am thankful that we are within walking distance of a small grocery store (and Starbucks).

This is LWK's first snow storm and we finally took him out in it today.   The past few days have been spent staying cozy in our jammies!
He is so bundled up, he kind of looks like Randy from A Christmas Story!
I'm not sure what he really thought about the snow, but he was a trooper.  He even let me help him make his first snow angel!

LWK's first snow angel!

When we were done with our photo op, LWK was happy to cuddle up to Daddy!

The Sitter

LWK is a pretty strong willed kid sometimes.  He has been wanting to stand since he was about a week old (no kidding) but has spent the last few months REFUSING to sit.  He can kind of do it, but seems to get distracted and would rather lay on his side in a "centerfold" type pose or lay on his tummy when concentrating on something.  By the way, I do remember the post where I confessed that I didn't make him do tummy time because he hated it so much.  I even talked to his doctor about it since his other physical development is fine.  She just thought he decided to skip sitting and would eventually come back to it.

So tonight I decided to ditch the baby/toddler bathtub we have been using and just give him a bath in the regular tub.  He decided to SIT THE ENTIRE TIME while playing with his toys.  He was perfectly happy and I didn't give him much support unless I was washing him.  I guess someone (not me) is in control of how this whole raising a kid is going to go!

Mamas and Babies

One of the best pieces of advice I got before having LWK was that I needed to attend a parent/baby class offered at a hospital about 40 minutes away from our home after he arrived.  I wasn't sure at first, but the first three months were FREE and my friends who didn't have kids didn't really understand me anymore and my friends with kids were back to work and far too busy!  I also figured I had all the time in the world since I was taking 5 months of maternity leave.  LWK and I first went when he was about a month old.  We were both tired, my hair was falling out and I was lonely!  I packed up our little guy and off we went!

Thank goodness we made the time!  Each week there was a different topic such as sleep (or lack thereof), playing with your baby, your new relationship with your partner...  After the topic, we would talk about what was going on with our babies.  It was such a wonderful way to express your fears and hopes and dreams for these new little people and not be judged.  I think everyone in our class had a tear-filled day at some point and there was such a a wonderful circle of love and understanding around you when that happened.  And yes, I had a meltdown one day over not being able to nurse, no matter how hard I tried (maybe that should be a blog topic one of these days).  As much as I had worried about "coming out" about my lack of breastfeeding (but hours of pumping), all I received was understanding and support from this amazing group of parents.

Fast forward 8 months and I am still in touch with moms and dads I met in the class.  Many of us have returned to work, but we will find time to help support each other and meet up.  We met up this afternoon for a playdate.  Now that the babies are mobile, they are so much fun!  And us moms (and dad) had a great time chatting and supporting each other even though we are now far more confident and less tired!

Thanks again, RKM for your wonderful advice about 10 months ago!

9 Month Doctor Visit

Today LWK had his 9 Month Well-Baby visit to his doctor today.  It was so nice to take him to the doctor when he was actually WELL for once!  Since I go back to work tomorrow, I fear that we will be back to the perpetual cold of daycare!  It was also nice for him to not have any shots today (although he will have quite a few at his next appointment :()

Here is an update of his stats:
Weight:  18lbs, 10 oz!!!  He gained 3/4lb in 2 weeks!  I think it was all the cuddles, lots of time at home and not being sick that helped fill him out! 25th percentile.  Seriously, how did we get a skinny baby?

Height:  28 inches.  Again, I am not sure how accurate this is since it was the same nurse who measured him at 29 inches last week!  Maybe we should go for 28 1/2 inches...  This puts him at about the 50th percentile.

Everything Else:  Our doctor thinks he is perfect.  She loves his personality and thinks he is a bit ahead on his development with language and movement.  She is pretty certain he will be talking and walking (or running) at his 12 month visit in April.  She thinks it is funny that he is too busy to sit.  Since he is now pulling himself up and crawling like crazy, she believes he is perfectly fine and once he gets used to his new mobility he will come back to sitting.

Who would have thought that shaking the Cheerio container could bring so much joy???

9 Months Old!

Wow, LWK will have spent the same amount time outside of me than inside of me this month.  These past 9 months have gone faster than I ever could have imagined.  He is becoming more and more uncooperative with these monthly photos.  It is like he knows that I REALLY want these pics at a certain time and he REFUSES to cooperate!  We have his 9 month check up on Tuesday, so I will update his stats then, but here is what our little guy is doing now:

The ONE shot we could get on the rug that wasn't his backside.

Length:  29 inches (I'm not sure how accurate this is, he was pretty squirmy).
Weight: 17lbs 11oz (again, not sure how accurate this is)
Clothes:  9 months, although his is starting to grow out of some of these lengthwise.  I'm pretty sure he will never grow out of things widthwise!
Diapers:  Size 3s
Teeth: 2 on the bottom, loves to chew on his crib spindles (not the rails like a normal baby!)
Sleep:  Usually 2 naps a day for about an hour to and hour and a half if there isn't something more interesting going on.  He is sleeping through the night about half the time.
Thank goodness Mom has "Sport Mode."
Food:  Four 9oz bottles each day, sometimes less and sometimes more.  This month he tried Cheerios and green beans, but his favorites are still bananas, applesauce and pear sauce!  We tried yogurt this morning and after making a funny face with the first few bites, he really seemed to like it.  He is starting to figure out the sippy cup!
Movement:  Crawling EVERYWHERE!!!  The smaller the space, the better.  He loves to check out the difference between the carpet and linoleum. He wants to flip over on the changing table all the time - scary!  He is fearless, which strikes the fear of God through my heart.
Games:  Loves to play Peek-A-Boo and is figuring out all these new Christmas toys that play music, move and flash.  He is started to open and close things!  He looks UNDER rugs just to see what is there.
Toys:  Loves a wood puzzle that we have - the head of a lion is his absolute favorite piece to take off.  He likes to shake the Gladware container with Cheerios in it.  I know I am destined to have a drummer...
Cognitive:  He has grasped this Object Permanence thing, no more hiding thing behind your back to redirect!

So here are more pics.  However, it is more a replay of how the whole "taking pictures" thing went today.
You didn't really need me to stay on the rug, right Mom?

Wait, there might be something under the rug.

Ooo, a book that crinkles!

Hey, I know how to open dresser drawers!

I'll just give her my winning, drooly smile and Mom will be okay.

Happy New Year!

LWK, the Party Animal, stayed up until a bit past 9pm.  This is about an hour and a half PAST his usual time and he really didn't want to go to sleep.  Maybe he was worried about missing Ryan Seacrest on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve or something.

What a great way to end 2011, as our little family.  I keep thinking about how rough the end of 2009/beginning of 2010 was.  This year and the addition of our precious LWK has pretty much made up for how trying life was a couple of years ago!
Party in LWK's crib, 9pm.
