Dandelions

The weather hit the 80s today.  A bit too hot for my Seattleite taste, but it was fun to dress LWK in shorts!  When I picked him up today, he just couldn't leave the dandelions alone.  Our poor daycare mom will NEVER get rid of the weeds in her yard!

By the way, I wasn't the one who taught him to blow on the dandelions, but I love how much joy it brought him!  I guess it is one of those childhood moments we all have that we dread as adults because all we can think about is how much work will be involved down the road!

Before and After

This is kind of exciting, my photos were chosen by MeRa Koh to show my before and after improvement on her blog!  It is still amazing to me how much a one day workshop completely changed how I take photos!

Bunny Buns

Things I never thought I would do until I had a kid - make food look like animals....

I was trying to fancy up the pillsbury cinnamon rolls, so I made them look like bunnies.  The boys were not impressed, but I thought they were cute!

The most important part, they were still edible!

Crayon and Carpet

I knew he was being too quiet!  When I checked on him, LWK had moved his coloring to the floor.  And by floor, I mean carpeting.

I didn't even know that crayon could color on things other than paper and walls.  At least he chose my favorite color, blue!

I tried the iron/paper towel trick, then the goof-off trick.  The thing that worked???  Magic Eraser!  And then some spray carpet cleaner.

Afterwards, he was sitting like this, so angelic....

It is kind of hard to stay mad at him when he is sitting with his hands folded and his feet crossed like the best behaved 3 year old ever (haha)!

Funny Things My 3 Year Old Says: The Confession

It has been a pretty slow week around our house.  The adults haven't been feeling very well and we haven't had the energy for pictures or fun and exciting things when we get home from work/daycare.  However, I do have a little funny from today.

LWK is talking all the time.  It is sweet and endearing and overwhelming and confusing sometimes.  He still asks for things and we don't understand what he is saying, or he is adamant about something and we nod, even if we have no idea what we are talking about.....

When I pick LWK up from school, he always runs to the door and gives me a big hug.  I always ask if he had a fun day, and he always says yes.  Here was today's exchange:

Me: "Hi Luke!  I missed you today!  Did you have a fun time??"
LWK (while hugging me and squishing my cheeks with his little hands): "Yes, Mommy!  I pushed X down."
Me: "Oh no, did you tell X you were sorry?"
LWK: "Yes, Mommy.  X pushed LWK too, so it okay."
Me:  "It's never okay to push someone.  What do you say if someone pushes you?"
LWK: "I'm sorry....."

Hmmm, I guess he has that apologetic Canadian thing down.  Maybe we should teach him how to say "sorry" with a cute Canadian accent!

It also feels pretty good that he feels like he can tell me something he could be in trouble for.  I wonder how long this honesty will last????

And here is a random photo thrown in for good measure.  When did LWK get so long?????  He takes up half the bed when he lays on it like this!

***  No fear, by the way.  I did tell LWK that he doesn't need to say "sorry" when someone pushes him, but that he should remind the person who pushed him that it is never nice to push.

Easter

We had a pretty laid back Easter Sunday.  I didn't make it to church, but we made it to Pomegranate as a family and had a yummy brunch.  They had coffee, I feel thankful and at peace there, so that is almost church, right???

LWK came down in the morning with his lamb, how appropriate!

We had a little egg hunt for LWK in our backyard - so happy that our lawn guys came and mowed!

He refused to carry his basket,
he just kept running over to it to put the eggs in!
He LOVED dropping those eggs in!
Every time he took an egg from St. Francis' shell, he thanked him and patted his head!
There was lots of running!
"I do it myself!"
He LOVED the jelly beans!
And then LWK came and sat on my lap on the floor.  He is such a little boy and looking so grown up.  It is hard to believe we have celebrated four Easters with him!  I am so glad that Jer snapped a couple of pictures of LWK and me!

The Easter Cookie

J brought LWK an Easter cookie from his favorite coffee shop today.  LWK just wanted to lick off the frosting!  My kind of kid....

The froggie socks are a favorite!

Legos, Trains and a New Lens for Mom

LWK's favorite way to play with his trains lately is to dump all his Legos on the track to the trains have to "biff and bash" through the blocks.  He sure loves to dump all those Legos, but sure doesn't like to clean them up...

Biffing and Bashing....

I love this "who me?" look!

The other fun thing about these photos is that I was trying out a new lens on my camera and I LOVE it! Getting a 50mm prime lens in October really changed what I could do with photos and I have loved using it.  However, I have been frustrated with not being able to take wide angle photos very well. This was really apparent when I take a picture in our house or in other tight quarters like with Santa in December.

I have been looking at different lenses and the awesome Nikon 24-70mm/f 2.8 zoom lens I wanted was $1900!!!  Um, that wasn't really an option.  I did a bit more research and found a far more affordable option, the Tamron 28-75mm/f 2.8 lens.  It was less than a quarter of the price of the Nikon lens and the range didn't go as low or high, but for a hobbyist, I don't think this will make a big difference for someone like me.  I think the photos are turning out beautifully!  I have become accustomed to having to move with my prime lens, it has been so nice to back away from LWK, zoom in, and capture him in his element.

All the pictures above where taken with me standing in basically the same place.  For a mom who is just dabbling in photography, this Tamron lens is just what I wanted to upgrade my pictures a bit.  I think we are pretty set for lenses until LWK starts playing sports, then I will need to invest in something that gives me great zoom for when there is a small herd of kids running after the soccer ball!

It will be fun to really try it out this weekend when the cousins get together for an Easter Egg Hunt at Grandma and Grandpa's house!

The Trampoline

LWK got a trampoline from Grammie and Grampie for his birthday.  We got it put together over the weekend and it is a hit!  He especially loves to bounce and watch Thomas!

The Dancer

LWK got a CD player for his birthday and Aunt Julie included a CD with Thomas songs.  Here is LWK's response:

I think it was a hit!

The Sketch Artist

As I was changing LWK this morning, he said, "Look Mommy, a tree!  And a bird!"  By golly, it does look like a tree and a bird!

Teddy has a Buddy

Ted E. Bear has a new buddy - Kermit!

Kermit was a birthday gift from MMH on Sunday and LWK loves him!  I called him "Kermie" and I was quickly corrected that his name is "Kermit."  LWK is also fascinated with the idea that Kermit eats bugs, so we keep looking for bugs in the house for him to have a snack!  Thankfully, we haven't been very successful finding them, so we just pretend!

Parent/Preschoolers Playdate

It is so hard to believe that the little babies that got to know each other 3 summers ago are preschoolers! We had a playdate with the four families that we have stayed in contact with over these years.  We just all fall back into step with each other and it is so nice to have the kids (who are all within a month in age of each other) play together.  It is also fun to go down memory lane with how much they have grown and changed!

The 3 Year Appointment

LWK had his 3 year old well child appointment today with Dr. G.  She continues to be amazed with him, as do we all.  She was impressed at his speech, how well he moves and how he figures out problems.  I went back in the afternoon for an appointment about my foot (plantar fasciitis) and she said "if you look up the term "joy" in the dictionary, LWK's photo appears."  It is so very true.  Here are his stats:

Height:  39.5" tall - 90th percentile
Weight: 36 lbs - 75th percentile

We tried to do a hearing test and a vision test, but he wasn't very cooperative.  He just kept giggling during the hearing test because the instrument tickled his ear and he just kept running up to the eye chart to point to the hearts.  We aren't concerned about either of these things, so it was just cute and funny.

And the best part of this appointment????  No shots!!!

After his appointment, we went to Grandma and Grandpa's house and I caught this shot of Grandpa and LWK reading.  They are so sweet together!

Counting the squares on the placemat!

It is just nice to confirm we have a happy, healthy kiddo.  Again, we are so very blessed to have this neat little guy in our lives!

First Day of Spring Break

Now this is the way to start Spring Break:  gorgeous weather and wonderful friends!

The only bad part of the day is that I learned (yet again) that LWK has no fear.  We started our playdate at the park and then walked to a beautiful grove of trees to have lunch.  Our picnic place was out of sight of the play area, but it didn't stop LWK from taking off and running all the way back to the play area with no worries about me being anywhere near him.  I have tried to stop chasing him lately because he thinks it is a game and this time I let him get a little too far.  He made it all the way to the parking lot before stopping.  Thank goodness he did stop and I ended up hauling him back to the trees. Hence this last pic, AGM was happy to have LWK back and LWK looks totally miffed that his plans to escape were foiled.

The 3rd Birthday Party

We celebrated LWK's 3rd birthday with friends and family today!  Of course, we went with a train theme and out little engineer was adorable, like usual!

I made a train engine out of random boxes and the front of the
engine is his invitation!
The cupcake toppers were from
Harriet's House of Cakes on Etsy.
The paper decor was from GiggleBees on Etsy.

We had a buffet set up for food - sandwiches and fruits and veggies.  I used some rectangle serving dishes for snacks to look like cars of the train.  And I used Oreos for wheels - I loved that touch!

At the most recent birthday party we went to, part of the decor was coloring pages for the kids with crayons.  I copied her idea and I think all the kids (and many of the adults) took time to color.  It was kind of a nice place for the kids to be able to sit down and decompress a bit!

Can't you just hear him "choo-chooing???

The new train pieces were a hit!
MMH came all decked out for the party!
I love the MMH and LWK are buddies both at daycare AND in real life!
LWK is loving all his presents, but he was VERY fixated on his Thomas whistle.
Balloons were a hit!
AGM was so happy there were cupcakes,
she would have disappointed if we had regular old cake!
JAK (the oldest of the little guests)
showed AGM how to use our stairs as a slide!

To end the night, J and LWK skyped with Grammie and Grampie!  They were thrilled to see him in all his train engineer cuteness, but I am pretty sure they think he is adorable no matter what he happens to be wearing!
