Rocks and Rainbows

Look what I found in my coat pockets when I got to work?

Nothing like finding the rocks LWK gave to me at the trains over the weekend to remind me to find pleasure in the simple things in life.

And then, when we got home, LWK drew me a rainbow with his new (washable) white board markers!

Daycare Adventures

I love how much LWK loves being a part of her "family."  Honestly, since he was 5 months old, he has been a part of her family and it makes me a little sad to think he has almost outgrown his time there.

I am glad we decided to have LWK in Pre-K 3 days a week and with her the other two days next year.

Our daycare mom has sent a couple of photos this week. It always makes me happy to know that LWK has grown and learned so much there and made such good friends!

And I guess MMH and LWK got a little too creative when coloring today.  They both had marker all over their face!  Thank goodness for washable markers! Maybe they are future tattoo artists???

Pre-K, Here We Come!

We got our acceptance letter for the adorable Farm School here in town!  LWK will be in Pre-K in the fall and we couldn't be more excited to have this experience as a family.  I do admit, though, that I got a little weepy when I realized my baby is going to school next year!

This will be one of LWK's classmates.  His name is Wilbur, of course!

Bonus Day!

It is between semesters at work and I get a day to do grades - either from home or school or Starbucks.  I decided to stay home (most of my grades are already done) and hang out with LWK-a-roo.  Wouldn't you make the same choice?

We had a picnic in the living room while watching morning cartoons!

And in the afternoon we made muffins.  THis is where my control freak nature comes out.  LWK didn't want to actually stir anything, but lift it up and make a mess.  I think I will stop asking him to help me with baking for the time being.  It is way too stressful.  Hey, but the muffins are good and LWK is actually eating them for breakfast, which is a relief since he was refusing to eat breakfast at all lately!

Train Adventure

It isn't often that you get 60+ degree weather in the PNW in JANUARY, so we had to take advantage of it.  We headed down to visit the old trains (I used to call it "the train graveyard" until I had a little boy who is a little obsessed by trains) downtown.  They are strangely beautiful with their rust and wear, each of them has a story to tell and I love it!  So did LWK and Daddy!

And there weren't only trains, but ROCKS!  LWK was in heaven!

What a fun day with our sweet boy!

Pizza Night!

We didn't know that Papa Murphy's (take and bake pizza place) has 'Lil Murphy's so that kids can build their own pizza.  LWK had fun and was super adorable.  He eschewed the sauce and went straight for the cheese, but he had to taste test that too.  I love his concentration when making his pizza and the glee when he was done!

It Hurts My Ears!

LWK has always been a bit sensitive to sound.  As a baby and toddler, he would just scream and cry if a noise surprised him or we were someplace noisy like a concert or near sirens.  It has gotten better over the years, and especially the last 6 months or so.  I think the only upsetting time he has had recently was when we were on the tarmac to load onto the plane to Canada because the airplane engines were SOOOOOO loud.  Honestly, I wanted to cry too.

Today, when we were walking out to the car after daycare, the neighbor was running his tabletop saw in his garage and LWK covered his ears and said, "That sound hurts my ears!"

It was so nice to have him verbalize what we all knew and for him to work it out with, " but that is okay, it will stop soon.  It is just too loud."  I guess all the coaching from me has truly become his inner voice!

He still hates the vacuum though - he runs and hides when we even open the closet with the vacuum in it!

Funny Things My 3 Year Old Says: I Love You....

LWK has started giving us hugs and kisses and saying, "I love you to and back."  We love you to (the moon) and back, too, sweetie!

Sesame Street

I keep thinking we will put this in storage, but then he spends a half hour making up a story with different voices for each character.

Super Bowl Part 2

I can't believe the Seahawks going again this year! Just give us the last 10 minutes and we can win a game!

The Loop

This is the first time I have seen LWK make an actual loop with his train track that connects.  He has been in the mode of making a straight line all the way through the dining room, but maybe he has entered his loop phase.

Oh yeah, I asked my students how long they were into trains and Thomas and one of them (13 years old) admitted he just put them away last summer and that he can't wait until his little cousins come over so he can get it out again!

Sleeping Beauty

No matter how demanding or what a terror he may have been during the day, my heart melts when he is sleeping like an angel.

Wednesday, January 14, 2015

LWK and I stayed home today - he has a pretty wicked cold, hasn't been sleeping well and has been pretty miserable (and so have mom and dad since we are all short on sleep).  I took advantage of his lethargy by cleaning up the house a bit.  When I was almost done with the bathtub, LWK wanted to help, so he helped "clean up the water" after I rinsed the tub.  I love his "method:"

It is good to know that all the time we have spent sopping up puddles on the floor is a transferrable skill. Also, much like I can't wait for him to really help fold laundry, take out the trash and dust, I can't wait until he is old enough to REALLY help clean the bathroom with actual cleaning products.

Pancakes with Maple Syrup AND Sugar

Just to prove that he is half Canadian and Half American, he wanted maple syrup AND sugar on his pancakes this morning.  He was also rolling them like Grandma used to as a little girl!  Not a bad way to start a sick day at home!

Loving on Daddy

I love how sweet my favorite boys are together.

Bouncy House Birthday Party

We headed to a birthday party for one of LWK's daycare friends.  She had a bouncy house, so LWK was in heaven!
This is the most still he was the whole time in the bouncy house!
I was also impressed that he sat at the table and
waited patiently for treats.  And then he devoured his cupcake!

Funny Things My 3 Year Old (no longer) Says: No More Mac and A Cheese

Such a sad day, LWK has started saying "Macaroni and Cheese," no more "Mac and a Cheese."  It is one of those things we never really corrected since it was so sweet.  Kind of like when he said "neat, neat" for "night, night."  Before we know it,  he will be saying "yellow" instead of "Lellow."

And his love of trains is neverending.  Can you believe that he has been on a train binge (or is it habit now?) for half his life????

I snapped this photo of LWK playing peek-a-boo with me after school today.  I love the twinkle in his eye!

New Christmas

Even though we have a family where there are no separations, we STILL end up having 3 Christmases every year in some form or another.  This year we had our "New Christmas" celebration with grandparents and cousins on January 3rd.

The boys had a great time playing trains together - I love that the cousins are excited to come and play trains with LWK!

The were playing so nicely that my sister and I (mostly my sis) were able to present our own version of "Who Do You Think You Are" to my dad.  Our family tree has always run out with a James Riley who happened to be a captain in the Union Army in the Civil War, who died in a Confederate prison after being injured and captured at Gettysburg.  We were never able to find out who his parents were or how he came to a reasonably prestigious position in life, until recently when my sister was about to make some contacts.  I had found a few things along the way, but Julie really put it all together.  I loved the look on Dad's face as we presented him with a family history that we didn't know existed until recently!  We have some ties to pretty prestigious people (think Underground Railroad, Abolitionists and the Suffragette movement) as well as the writer of The Wizard of Oz!

After the big reveal, we had dinner and the the boys got to open their presents!  You know, the thing they had been waiting for all night!  Here is the aftermath of opening presents, because who has time to take pictures of that craziness?!?!?!

JRK practicing to be the Billy Joel or Elton John

Time to climb on Uncle Chris!
Playing Hockey!  I think LWK will be a goalie someday!
LWK AND JAK having a conversation before family photos.
Maybe it was about what their moms chose for them to wear.
Finally!  Good photos of the family at Christmas!

The proud grandparents!
The whole family!  And I figured out how to make the
flash less flashy and to use the remote control!
It was a fun night and I am so glad we were able to capture some family memories!  Best of all, LWK actually SAT AND COOPERATED for photos - he never does that!
