Things That Scare My Child

1.  Vacuums
2.  Dustbusters
3.  Daddy's sneezes/nose blowing

And the newest random thing that scares him:

4.  HAIL!!!

I find it funny that he isn't scared of my hairdryer.  In fact, it is impossible to contain him when I am drying my hair because he wants to see what I am doing and always has a huge smile on his face.  Kids are funny

The Rings

LWK has had these rings for quite a while.  He started off using them as teething rings.  Then he moved on to banging them together.  He has finally started actually stacking them.  So far he can do the blue and the green (the ones with the biggest holes) but he has started trying to get the yellow one on.  The funniest part, he doesn't like when there is more than one on the stacker.  This is the Luke-a-licious process:

1.  Dump all the rings off that mom put on in rainbow order
2.  Pick up the blue one in his right hand
3.  Pick up the green one in his left hand
4.  Put the blue ring on the stacker
5.  Pass the green one to his right hand
6.  Lift the blue one off the stacker with his left hand
7.  Put the green one on with his right hand
8.  Pass the blue one to his right hand
9.  Repeat steps 4 - 8 ad nauseum

Yeah, we are pretty sure he is right handed!!!

Here he is playing before I realized he had an actual "process" aside from only wanting one ring on at a time.
ROY G. BIV Order ala Mom.

Let's dump them all!

Got my favorite one - the blue one.

This dropping it on is getting easier!

So proud!

The "New Food"

LWK and I visited our friend and her new baby boy this afternoon.  They have cats.  Our little foodie (who often tosses the perfectly yummy and healthy food I make for him off his high chair tray) was just waiting for his moment to strike.  We took our eyes off him for just a second and he went straight for the cat food and got a good mouthful.  We couldn't pry his mouth open and he was quick to swallow!  It was chicken flavored, so at least he kept with a go-to food in our house!

The Swing

We have had amazing weather this weekend (and for much of this last week) here on the Ridge.
I love the scenery where we live!

Today we decided to stick close to home and we went to for a walk to one of the toddler parks.  LWK got to swing for the first time and he LOVED it!  In fact, it was Mom who was a bit more freaked out that LWK was!
Higher Daddy!

Swinging with Mom.

Those blue eyes get me every time.

Spring Break!

This has been a busy spring break!

On Monday LWK had his 1 year doctor's appointment.  Like usual, our fabulous doctor thinks he is perfect.  He showed off his babbling skills and even said "up" when he wanted me to pick him up.  She loves how curious he is and how he watches conversations and is so close to walking!  He had two pokes for shots and didn't even cry (but was in bed sounds asleep before 7).  We are starting the transition to whole milk, but we will keep supplementing with formula for a while since we keep trying to fatten him up!  He was 20lbs, 12 oz (one ounce less than two weeks ago) and 30 1/2 inches (a half inch less than last time but he didn't want to really stretch out either).  He is in the 15th percentile for weight and 75 percentile for height.  Again I ask, "how did we get a skinny baby???"  My doctor's answer, "well, genetics are funny sometimes."

On Tuesday we met with Becky and AGM at the Woodland Park Zoo and had a peacock really show us his beautiful feathers.  Mom was impressed, LWK didn't really care.

Wednesday we had the pleasure of having a playdate with our friends from Parent/Baby Group.  We were all a little sad, it doesn't seem that long ago that we started parent baby class together and they are all turning into 1 year old toddlers this month!  A, the youngest of the bunch, is even walking!  In perfect LWK fashion, I expressed a worry that he isn't waving bye-bye and as soon as I said it, he did it!

On Thursday we went to parent and baby class.  It was fun to see how active all the kids are, half of them are walking and they are all playing with the toys and eating each other's snacks!  We had lunch with Daddy and then LWK crashed on the way home.

Friday we saw Gabrielle for coffee in the morning and went to visit Aunt Julie and the cousins in the afternoon.  Gabrielle is soon to be a mama - she and her husband will be travelling soon to meet their son in Thailand and finally bring him home after a LONG wait.  We are so happy for them and know they will be FABULOUS parents to a sweet little boy!

Aunt Julie gave LWK his first little haircut since he was becoming a little mulletish!  I meant to get photos but LWK was completely freaked out by the clipper sound (we will add that to the list with the blender, vacuum and dust buster).  She just trimmed up the back with scissors after the clipper debacle and now he really looks like a little boy.  Mom kept the few wisps of hair that we trimmed.

Saturday was Luke's one year photo shoot!  It is amazing to think he started out as a fuzzy headed, gummy grinning 3 month old and now has a full head of light hair and 8 teeth!  He was a smiley, happy guy for the pics.  I can't wait to see the panel of shots that we will be getting to commemorate this first year!

This week he has also perfected putting things into his dump truck and dumping them out and doing the "sit and spin" where he is sitting and moves his legs so he spins all the way around to survey his surroundings!  Along with waving, he has started blowing kisses.  I feel like he changes every day!

Easter

Last year Easter was a blur with a 3 week old.  This year was much more fun.  LWK still doesn't really understand the unwrapping gift thing, but he loved the book, ball and helicopter that came in his Easter Basket!  We spent the afternoon with Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Julie, Uncle Chris, Cousin Joel, Cousin James and their Grandpa Jim!  We had a little egg hunt, got to love on Baby James and LWK tried marshmallows and ham for the first time!

Hunting for eggs with grandma and dad!  LWK's favorite was the soccer ball, of course!

The hat kills me!

This is how LWK rolls...

The Woodland Themed Birthday Party

It has taken me a bit of time to get this post up.  Things have been busy, we have all been sick and I think I am in a bit of denial about having a one year old!  We had a woodland themed party for LWK's first birthday.  The decor was fun to put together (except the red icing for the cupcakes, but more on that later) and seemed like everything came full circle from his nursery theme!  Most of the ideas came from Pinterest because I don't think I can be creative on my own!  This is a bit of a photo bomb (thanks Aunt Julie for be a great photographer), but here it goes!

The wall and high chair decor is from the Etsy Shop  http://www.etsy.com/shop/PaperPartyParade

The crown was from the Etsy Shop  http://www.etsy.com/shop/ohsewsweetcreations.

I used LWK's monthly rug photos as a garland on our mantel.  It was fun to see how much he changed over the past 12 months!

We used photos of the highlights from the last year as table decor.  The owl was a gift from a friend!

The toadstool cupcakes!  I was afraid they were going to be neon pink so I used 4 boxes of red food coloring!  Later I learned that I should have used gel food coloring and a drop or two of black to get a good red.  The lucky part was that the red darkened over night, so the frosting was a true red in time for the party.  I vow to never make anything with red food coloring again - my kitchen looked like a murder scene!  For the cupcake stand I used three different size wood cuts I got at Ben Franklin and used faux wood contact paper on soup cans for the pedestals.

This little watermelon hedgehog was the most fun and relaxing thing I made!  It was a fun little project for a fruit bowl.  We now have the joke that we have to have a watermelon sculpture of some sort for all of Luke's gatherings (remember his baptism turtle???  http://ridgeramblings.blogspot.com/2011/08/baptism.html).

Grandpa's birthday is March 31st, so Grandma brought a German Chocolate cake so we could celebrate the 1 year old and the 73 year old!

LWK has been working on his "Cheese Ball" Grin.  We got to see it a lot on his birthday!

He was a bit tentative about the cake...

But he managed to get a little taste of frosting before we sang happy birthday.  He had lots of help blowing out his candle!

He didn't really like the cake or frosting, but he did like smearing it on his face and in his hair.  Does this mean that mom has done a good job keeping him away from artificial sweets???  It probably wasn't the best idea to have red frosting on his cupcake - it looks like he has a nosebleed!

After a bath, LWK spent some time practicing walking, with Grandma's help.

Cousin James woke up just in time to witness the fun of all the new toys!

LWK and I had fun reading Jamberry and the Little Blue Truck with AGM.

The boys (Dad, Sky, Joel and LWK) had fun playing with LWK's new toys - this activity box was especially fun.

LWK loves anything with wheels, so the car from Uncle Josh was a hit!  And it makes poppy sounds!

And the train from Gram and Grampie has wheels too.  And lots of fun parts!

LWK likes his comfy reading chair too!

We still can't believe that we have a one year old - it has all gone so fast!

LWK, your first birthday was a success.  You were a trooper with all the people, the presents and the new food.  You slept well that night.  We are looking forward to celebrating many more birthdays and milestones with our Luke-a-licious, Luke-a-roo, Luke-a-saurus, Cool Hand Luke and Sweet Lu.  I love that we chose your name so it couldn't have a nick name but have instead lengthened it out!  We love you so much and have treasured every day of the last year with you and can't wait to see what other surprises you have in store for us!

What I Have Learned in the Last Year

I have been thinking a lot about the last year and what I have learned about myself, my husband and my baby (now one year old!).  Some things have been good, some have been bad and some are just a surprise.
  • I can't control everything (or anything on some days)
  • A nice glider was one of the best purchases we made for the nursery
  • Peek-A-Boo is super fun
  • As is making up words to LWK's favorite songs
  • An uneven number of teeth is super cute
  • The things I thought would be easy were hard and the things I thought would be hard have been easy
  • Laundry will never be 100% done
  • I need to get over my house not being clean (it was never perfect before, but now it seems even more overwhelming)
  • Formula feeding is not the end of the world... and I should be nicer to myself about it
  • Cheerios are yummy (for LWK and Mommy)
  • Going to brunch instead of dinner is far more family friendly
  • Being a mom (especially a working mom) is kind of a lonely duel job
  • I have found out who my true friends are (both old and new)
  • I fall in love with J more each day as I see him being a wonderful Daddy
  • I may not sleep well again for the next 18 years

Every lost minute of sleep, every tear, and every moment of worry has been worth it for this:

One Year Old

LWK has been alive for 366 days!  One (leap) year of life.  So amazing.

Here are his stats:

Weight: 20lbs, 13 oz.
Height:  31 1/2"
Diaper Size: 3
Sleep:  11 hours at night, 7ish - 6ish and one or two naps during the day.  The morning nap we can count on and is usually 1 1/2 - 2 hours.  The afternoon nap is usually only an hour if he takes one at all.
Clothes:  12 months but for some things he is wearing 18 months for the length!
Teeth:  8! For the first time in his life he has an equal number of teeth on the top AND the bottom!
Food:  This month he tried mango, cantaloupe, avocado and corn.  His favorites are still applesauce, pears, bananas, yogurt and chicken.

Drink:  We found a sippy cup (that looks suspiciously like a bottle) that he doesn't hate!  Woohoo!  I don't mind him drinking from a real cup and we do it at home, but on the go it is easier to have a sippy cup on hand.  He is having 4 -5 6 ounce bottles of formula a day.  I just can't seem to get him to want to eat more to make up for what he is drinking!
Movement:  Crawling fast and LOUD, Standing and Crusin'!

Words:  Mama (mom), Dada, UhOh.  He said "Mom" on Saturday morning when I walked into his nursery - coincidence???  UhOh is the only one he uses in context!
Toys:  His Music Table, anything with wheels, shape sorter, blocks, Owl and anything he can shake that makes noise.
Games:  Peek A Book and opening the closing the cabinet doors.  Actually he likes to open and close any door at all.

A Year of LWK

A photo bomb of LWK's monthly photos on his nursery critter rug!  It is fun to see how much he has changed.  I realized that there is only a couple photos of him smiling!  I think he realized that mom "wanted to get this right" and he would crumble under the pressure!  I'm not sure if I will keep it up for the second year, although I think he will change just as much and it would be nice to have a record of it as well.  I guess I have a month to decide what I want to do!
