Spring in January...

Today is super rainy and yucky, it is hard to believe that just last weekend was so beautiful that many Seattleites were wearing shorts and sandals without socks!  We were able to enjoy the weather a bit as a family!

Stopping to smell the flowers at Pomegranate!

So handsome after his haircut.  He chose the red lollypop afterwards and it didn't get all over him the way the blue ones usually do!

It's good to remember that the weather can be in the 50s and sunny in January!

Playdate Day

We had not one, but two playdates today.

First, we met with my photography teacher to have a playdate with her family and pick up my prize from winning her photo contest!  Our boys are only a couple of weeks apart in age, her little girl is sweet and LWK LOVED their dog!  In fact, he was a little obsessed with the dog, thank goodness she was just as excited to have someone who wanted to play with her as he was to give her attention!  We talked preschools and photography and trains - a perfect morning!

Then we headed to the mall to meet with the Mork girls.  They got to run around and work their wiggles out!
ERM likes to go down slides head first!
AGM likes to drive boats.
LWK likes climbing up the slide.
And the winning photo of the day is this sweet one of AGM and LWK.  There are no words for the cuteness between the two of them!

My First Paid Photo Session!

A friend of mine from my first attempt at teaching middle school had her first baby last month.  She had been admiring the photos I have been taking of LWK since the fall and, when her photographer for a newborn session fell through, she asked if I would take photos of her sweet 6 week old son, PLC!

I have to say I was a bit, okay, a lot nervous about this.  What if they were terrible shots?  What if I totally messed up?  What if she hated every picture I took???  I was very up front with her about still having a long way to go and learning, and she still wanted me to do it!  Thank you, N for having such faith in me!

I arrive Sunday afternoon and it was so good to chat and see her since we hadn't worked together in so long.  We got some lovely shots in PLC's nursery and in their bedroom.  We had so much to talk about that we ran out of "good" light, but I was still able to get some great shots once the sun went down that were helped by some simple Lightroom fixes.

I am so happy that so many turned out well and that N had so much faith in me to capture such a beautiful baby boy and his equally beautiful mommy!  We are going to meet up next weekend so I can do a few photos with her husband as well and capture some shots we missed.  This was a great learning experience and it will be fun to take what I have learned and apply it to future photographs!

The Lego Table

A couple of weeks ago I did my first Ikea hack to build a Lego Table for LWK and J.  LWK had played with it a little bit, but he is starting to play with it more and more!  I think it is a win for our family.  It fits under our window perfectly and it encouraged LWK and J to build things other than towers to knock over!

Silly me, I thought having a Lego table would mean
there wouldn't be piles of Legos on the floor...
First things first, Ted E. Bear needs a place to sit.
I guess there will still be towers!
Hours of fun!
I love how LWK just gets lost in his own little world when he plays.  The bright sunshine and pretty colors make for a perfect little Lego spot!

The Raisin

So I was working on dinner and LWK was happily watching some Little Einsteins and eating raisins when he came to me with white yogurt dripping from his nose and said "I have raisin in nose!"  When I asked for clarification, and he said yes, that he did have a raisin in his nose and it hurt, I started laughing and looked online to see what to do.  I couldn't see the raisin, but the yogurt kept dripping out.  I had him blow his nose.  I had him lay down so I could try to see it.  And I kept laughing.  I barely got the words out to J when I called him about what had happened and when I did, we agreed to meet at Urgent Care 10 minutes away.  Just call me "Mother of the Year."

Clowning around in the waiting room.
LWK was perfectly happy the whole time we were waiting: playing, laughing and singing.  When we got into the room and the doctor came in, LWK was happy until he tried to look up his nose.  Then the squirming and crying began.  The doctor didn't see anything, so he asked me to blow through LWK's mouth while shutting the other nostril.  All I got was snot on the side of my face.  Then LWK was REALLY crying.  We tried it one more time and the doctor decided he didn't have anything up there.  He asked us to watch LWK and make sure his nose didn't swell or he didn't get a bloody nose or anything.  Maybe he DID have a raisin up his nose and he took it out, or it came out???  We will never know.

This was before the torture session...
In the end, a total false alarm.  Hopefully LWK won't ever tell me he put something in his nose when he didn't again.  I am just thankful it wasn't a trip to Urgent Care for something more serious like stitches or a broken bone!

Great Leader or Rabble Rouser???

As I was driving LWK to daycare this morning, he took off his socks and didn't want them back on before we went inside. As soon as we walked in the door and his buddies saw that he didn't have socks, they sat down on the floor and took theirs off.  This kid is either going to be a great leader or a rabble rouser.....

We All Live in a Yellow Submarine!

LWK serenaded me with "We All Live in a Yellow Submarine" on the way to work this morning.  I can think of far worse songs to start my day with!  AND there was a repeat performance as we were shopping at Target after school.  He made LOTS of people smile and I figure it is better than the "Jingle Bells" and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" he sang last week when we were there!

The Puzzle

LWK got this awesome train floor puzzle from Grammie and Grampie and he is fascinated with it.  He has been working so hard on it since Christmas.  Each day, he takes some time and learns where a few more pieces go.  I think when he puts his mind to it, he will be able to get it completely together - he can already do it with a little encouragement and piece selection from us!

He is actually able to get a lot more of the puzzle done, but he has been a little upset when I take his photo lately, so I had to be covert about the shots!

A Paying Photo Gig!

A former co-worker of mine just had a sweet baby boy.  Her newborn photographer fell through and she asked me to take photos of her son and she is going to PAY me!  Ack!!!  I am flattered, excited and nervous all at the same time!

LWK got to spend some time with Grandma and Grandpa last weekend while I was listening to some of my students play at piano contest.  LWK had a great time, took an amazing nap and was spoiled, like usual.

Grandpa thought LWK's new tractor was pretty cool - maybe we will need to get one for Grandpa's next birthday since he will be the big 7-5!

Mr. Photobomb.  "Hey Grandpa, where's my tractor???"
LWK was so excited for us to lift our feet and wiggle our toes like his favorite episode of Caillou.  He even got Grandma and Grandpa's socks off and wiggle their toes!  He is pretty persuasive!

Grandma and Grandpa gave LWK this little Snoopy Christmas figurine with Schroeder playing the piano as a keepsake for his Christmas piano.  LWK loved 'Noopy and had to put it on the table with Grandma's other trinkets!

And, of course, there was the rocking contest.  LWK gets Grandma and Grandpa to do this too with a "ready, set, GO!"

The Winning Photo!

A few weeks ago the teacher of the photography class I took hosted a little contest for holiday photos.  I submitted my favorite, posted that I needed votes of Facebook and I won!  I was doing okay before my shameless plug on Facebook, but it helped put me over the edge.

We took lots and lots of photos over the holiday, but this one is still my favorite.  That sweet little LWK just had to take his Ted E. Bear with him to meet Santa!  It is one of those photos that I know I will smile about for many years to come - it is such a perfect example of LWK being 2.5 and wanting to be big and little all at the same time!

We get a copy of Me Ra Koh's book "Your Child In Pictures"  and a gift certificate to use with Neyssa for some photographs.  I am thinking we need some pro photos done with Neyssa for LWK's 3rd birthday in a few months, especially since  I didn't get any pro shots done for LWK's 2nd birthday last year.  I had taken these great photos  just the month before so I am considering those his 2 year old photos!  It might be nice to actually BE in the photos for the big number 3 this year!

The Best Part of Ikea...

Aside from the Swedish fish and false sense of being able to be organized, of course, is the ice cream. And this kid LOVES ice cream.  Must be genetic.

Go Hawks!

Pretty big day here in Seattle, the Seahawks have a playoff game with homefield advantage!  I'm liking this road to the Superbowl!  Thank goodness Aunt Julie gave us some of cousin JAK's clothes that included this gem:

For the record, LWK liked the Seahawk on his shirt, but just wasn't thrilled about having his photo taken!

DIY Lego Table

My first Ikea hack - a Lego Lack table!

LWK got tons of Legos for Christmas and they end up strewn across the living room so I can step on them....  I've been thinking that he would like to have a place to build things and I would like to have them off the floor.  Actual Lego tables are pricey ($150 - $300????) and imitation tables get bad reviews. Then I stumbled upon this Ikea hack on Pinterest!  A perfect solution for this Ikea loving girl and Lego loving boys!!

Don't worry, I asked our resident Lego expert (J) to make sure this will actually work...

I ordered four green building plates from Lego online.  I got the regular Lego ones, not the Duplo plates.  That way, if this is a hit, LWK and J will be able to use this table when we make the transition to actual Legos in a few years.  The Lego store had the best price over Amazon for the green ones and I refuse to step foot in Toys R Us if I can at all help it.  The cost with shipping was $24.

I bought some Gorilla Glue at Target.  I've never used it before, so I bought the big bottle for $7.  I should have bought the little bottle - a little goes a long way!

After school today, LWK and I hit Ikea and picked up a Lack for a whopping $8.  I went with the dark one because it was cheaper and would go better with our living room.  You could also do white or a birch tone.

Total price for the project was under $40!  I think that is a good savings over a licensed table and hopefully a good savings to my feet!

After LWK went to bed, I put the Lack together - just screw the legs in - and measured across the table to find the center.

I dampened the top of the table (like Gorilla Glue recommends) and glued the plates down.  They fit perfectly together and were pretty well centered.

I used some of the low profile Lego blocks along the seams to keep the proper distance between the plates while the glue cures.

I put some of our heavy books on it for tonight to make sure the plates adhere well to the table - I can't wait to see what LWK and J think of it tomorrow!

The Hole-y Knees

As LWK was playing with his trains tonight, I noticed how threadbare his jeans were looking at the knees.  He crawled to get a train and when he sat back up, he had worn through his pants!  I have been waiting for it to happen, between the crawling on the floor and up the stairs and the crazy contortionist things he does, I am surprised he hadn't already worn through any of his other pants!
The raggamuffin....
Sometimes you just need to sit in your chair on the couch
with your sheep.  Oh toddlerhood.....
Love him...

Last Day of Break

Well, today is it, it is the last day of winter break.  It has been so nice to be home and enjoy this sweet boy.  He is talking so much, changing so fast and learning at lightening speed.  These are the times I treasure and moments I want to remember when I think about my 2.5 year old little boy when he is 25: when he is enthralled and entranced in his own little world.  We are so very blessed.

Last Play Date of Christmas Break

It wouldn't be a long break (or even a long weekend usually) without a playdate with the Mork girls. They are changing so fast, LWK and AGM are so sweet together and ERM is working hard to keep up!

ERM has this whole Moose-taming thing down!
AGM is ready to be the next Elton John or Billy Joel,
rocking out on the piano.
Puzzles with mom's help!
Working on puzzles together.  Couldn't they be any sweeter???
I love that we have two generations of friendship happening between our families!

We had a playdate with the cousins today and they boys had so much fun!  They are perfect stairsteps right now.  Little JRK is keeping up with the big boys!  I love that they get to grow up together!

JRK and LWK are kindred jumping spirits...
LWK loves having new toys to play with!
Little eyes are always watching!
Mmmmm, cookie dough!
See, stairsteps!!!

Lazy Morning

LWK and I got up around 8 this morning and we have been having fun just hanging out.  He has watched a little TV (but not his usual shows, it is nice to watch something other than Caillou!), but he has been playing with his trains and practicing taking the bins in and out of the Trofast.

His placemat has letters and animals on it and when we got to the skunk, he held his nose and said "skunks are STINKY!"  Can't you just hear him say it in this picture????

He also spent A LOT of time coloring.  He colored for a good 30 minutes.  I love his concentration and he is starting to color specific parts, not just a scribble on each page.  He is also working on his letters.  He can do an L, a U and an O!

I just can't get over how much and how quickly he is learning!  I used to worry about him being ready for Kindergarten since he has a spring birthday, but I am pretty sure he will be fine.  Maybe he will even be reading by the time he starts school!
